desi girl

so i'm home from bollywood class.  it was actually fun.  intimidating as all hell but fun.

most of the class participants know each other from previous classes.  i'm probably the only outsider per se.  most are enrolled in other dance classes there or fitness stuff.  it seems like a friendly enough group of women.  in total, there are ten of us.  kim didnt register.

we are basically dancing to one song and learning moves.  right now i'd say we are about 1/4 of the way through and it seems like we've learned A LOT of shit.  namely "deer hands" and "flower hands".  i know it sounds ridiculous, but it makes sense once you do it in the context of the song.

i've downloaded the song in hopes of practicing at home.  my moves are very VERY lame, but i'm trying.    i broke a little sweat, so all was not a loss.

in bollywood dance, women are instructed to smile A LOT, never turn your back to the audience unless you are performing a dance move.  and when the song says something like "heart" or "earrings" your dance moves should imitate what it's saying, almost like it's telling a story.  the dance itself looks very beautiful.  fluid even.  there are parts of it where it feels as if i should be holding veils or scarves and letting them flow.  honestly, it's gorgeous.  (aside, i also think my dance instructor is married to my hot vet...lucky girl!)

desi means pretty, proper.  in india, it's a compliment to be a desi girl.  you are a good girl, you say little, make your home comfortable, have babies...basically be subserviant...

despite that, i am getting VERY excited about indian culture...first the yoga, then the food, then the dancing...what's next?  hinduisim?  dont hold your breath...it just might be the next step.
