a whale of a time
occasionally you can catch a glimpse of a blow of water as they surface to breathe. it's what caught my attention the first time i saw the whales this afternoon. after that, there was a black back hitting the surface and dipping down again. and then soon after, another burst of water and a back.
the humpback whales are here to calve. apparently they dont feed while they're down here but just spend time with their young. i have heard that they are considering culling them because their numbers are so high...sickening to think of it....they think the whales are affecting the fisheries in alaska (because that's where they eat during the other parts of the year).
ch and i are considering renting a two person kayak and paddling out to get a closer glimpse of the whales. i wonder if that is a foolhardy idea...conversely, i'm excited and wanting to bring it on.
i saw real live WHALES today in their habitat!! i saw them from our balcony.
