beach bars

we met some really interesting older ladies the last time we were in oahu.

we used to go down to the beach bar each day and sit and have a few beer and kill the afternoon.

while there, we met margaret and jane chappell.  they would be there daily hanging out and passing time.

they caught our attention because jane was in a wheelchair and margaret was looking after her.  jane would draw attention to herself because she would yell OUCH every time margaret would touch her.  so margaret would try to get her out of the wheelchair, and jane would be yelling OUCH and it would stop the beach bar dead in its tracks.  the first day this happened, ch got up to help jane out and margaret basically winked at him and implied she was acting.  so the next day we were there, the same thing happened and we sat there and watched the newcomers to the bar try to help jane.  it was worth a giggle.

after a couple of days of that, they started talking to us.  they found out that we were canadian and were getting married that year.  well, for crying out loud, as soon as they heard we were engaged, there were huge smiles on their faces.  it was as if we were surrogate grandkids, they were so proud.  big smiles, even from jane who was half deaf and out of it 90% of the time.

this xmas i sent them a card and letter to say hi.  in the past we had exchanged cards.  one year we even got a postcard from them when they were in hawaii at the hilton.

i received a response back from margaret's neice...both ladies had since passed.  sadness.

since then we've exchanged a few emails always talking about the aunts and how wonderful they were.

it's funny how you can meet someone briefly and they will touch your lives unexpectedly.

rest in peace, margaret and jane...we will be thinking of you 03/10/10 at that beach bar.

xoxo
